Arriva invests £8m in Castleford

Arriva has invested £8m in 37 new ADL Enviro400 MMCs for its Castleford network. The new vehicles are due to enter service on 26 June. The day before, the operator has scheduled an official launch event for them, showcasing their new livery. The day will include a free hog roast, BBQ, a bouncy castle, numerous fun fair stalls and live music. This takes place at its Castleford depot on 25 June between 11am and 3.30pm. All contributions at the event will go towards cancer research. Those present will be able to ride on Arriva Yorkshire’s new Sapphire 163/166 bus on an ‘exclusive VIP tour’ around Castleford. The buses on the current Castleford 163/166 and 189 routes, as well as the Heckmondwike 254/255 service will all be replaced with these new additions to the Arriva Yorkshire fleet. They feature free wifi, USB sockets and E-Leather seating. The 163/166 will also have audio-visual next stop announcement systems installed.

With the new buses going live onto these three routes it also enables the local bus company to upgrade the buses on the Wakefield 444/446 and 425/427 routes. These will go into service towards the end of July/early August. All new buses will carry Arriva’s new livery, which is set to be gradually rolled out across the region on all new and refurbished buses.

Area MD for Arriva Yorkshire, Jon Croxford, said: “This is an incredibly proud moment for Arriva as we put another multi-million pound investment into the network and increase the journey experience for our customers.”

“We hope as many people as possible come to have a look around and see the new buses. Dewsbury Bus Museum have also kindly offered to bring along their 1967 Castleford Leyland Panther bus to showcase alongside our new vehicles. As well as being able to get on the buses and have a look around we’ll also be offering a free BBQ, giant hog roast, fun fair stalls, live music and face painting. It promises to be a great day and a magnificent celebration of our investment into West Yorkshire.”

Leeds Park and Ride developments

A new 1,000-space park-and-ride site has opened in the Leeds area. The Temple Green Park and Ride, which will take the number of park-and-ride spaces in West Yorkshire to approaching over 4,500 including rail stations, is in the Aire Valley, near junction 45 of the M1. It is free to use during the first week of the new service (offer ending 24 June). Metro, West Yorkshire’s transport authority, has started a survey asking people’s views of the site. Buses run between 6am and 8.50pm on weekdays every ten to 15 minutes and every ten minutes between 7am and 7pm on Saturdays. Tickets are priced at £3 for a Day ticket or £2.70 when customers buy five or more on a smartcard, with up to three children traveling free with every fare-paying adult. Free wifi is available on all buses.

In addition to the new site, extended opening hours have been put in place at the Elland Road Park and Ride site in Leeds. In a move intended to meet growing demand, services from the facility are going to start earlier and continue later on weekdays. Sunday services are also being introduced. As a result of the service’s popularity with shoppers, weekday services now start an hour earlier at 6am, continuing through until 9pm, two hours later than the current end of service. On Sundays, Park and Ride buses will run between 10.15am and 5.40pm

Baileys of Newbury receives new Turas 700

Baileys Coaches, based in West Berkshire, has taken delivery of a new Turas 700 minicoach from Doncaster-based Minis to Midis.

The new 29-seater vehicle is based on the Iveco Daily 70C18 chassis, fitted with an eight-speed ZF Hi-Matic gearbox, which the supplier said is proving extremely popular with operators.

The Turas 700 comes standard with in-dash and saloon air-conditioning, double glazing, audio system with pa, usb charging points and 4.5 cubic metres of luggage space. Baileys also specified a dvd player and monitor.

The chassis comes with a three year unlimited mileage warranty, plus fourth year driveline.

Baileys operates a fleet of executive specification coaches from 16 to 70 seats and covers a range of work from its fully equipped site just outside Newbury.

Director Darren Gale commented: “The Turas 700 fits perfectly into our fleet offering a stylish solution with excellent fuel economy and low noise levels. The vehicle is proving extremely popular with drivers and passengers.”

New CTA support and engagement appointments

The Community Transport Association (CTA) has appointed six Support and Engagement Executives to its staff.

The executives will be responsible for developing the organisation’s support programmes and will look for opportunities to make a difference on behalf of the people and communities who need transport that is accessible and inclusive. Their work will focus on outreach with members and other local stakeholders to identify support needs, recommend and co-design solutions and to increase take-up of CTA-led initiatives.

In England, the CTA welcomed Steff Riches, previously its Training Coordinator and Emma Sims, both of whom are based in its Manchester office.

In Scotland, the CTA appointed Cathy Jamieson, who is based in its Edinburgh office.

Carl Gough, David Brooks and Lindsay Haveland, previously Support and Development Officers based in North and South Wales, have now changed their roles to become Support and Engagement Executives.
